Linux Distributions
& Assorted Important Software |
Redhat
|
Redhat Linux is the most popular Linux distribution. Redhat is
also a big supporter of the Linux and Open Source community and their website has a great
deal of information about setting up Linux. |
Debian |
Debian is probably the second most popular Linux distribution.
They have a strong stance on Free Software that many people like. |
Slackware |
One of the older distributions. Slackware used to be the most
widely used and most up-to-date distribution but has fallen behind Debian and Redhat in
recent times. |
SuSE |
SuSE is very popular in Europe and is gaining
ground pretty quickly in popularity here in the USA.
|
Mandrake |
A newer distribution, based on Redhat. It is gaining ground
quickly and is aimed at new users. The ease-of-use enhancements they've made to Redhat
Linux won them Product of the Year at LinuxWorld Expo 1999. |
Caldera OpenLinux |
Caldera OpenLinux has been getting raves in the press and is very easy to
install. Be careful about which version you buy, the newest version is 2.3
but a lot of stores are still selling 2.2.
|
Stampede
GNU/Linux |
Stampede is a new distribution. It is optimized for maximum
speed on Pentium processors. |
WinLinux2000
|
WinLinux was the first distribution of Linux for Windows. It
runs in Windows so you can try Linux out without re-partitioning your harddrive. |
PhatLinux
|
PhatLinux is a distribution of Linux that runs under Windows,
like WinLinux above. It also has a cool name. |
SSH |
SSH is a way to connect to another computer and encrypt everything that
goes on between your computer and the remote system. It's very useful and
important if you care about security. We suggest you connect to SpinnNet
using SSH to access your webspace. If you are using Redhat Linux, the RPMs
for SSH are located here or on the
SpinnNet ftp site in the linux directory.
|
GNOME |
One of the two competing desktop environments for
Linux. GNOME is the default environment included with Redhat. |
KDE |
The other desktop environment available for Linux. The choice
between them is up to you, KDE and GNOME offer different things for different people and
like most software choices in the Linux world, this one is hotly contested. KDE is
included by default in the Mandrake and Corel distributions. |
Emacs |
Emacs is the undisputed king of text editors (Except to people
who use vi but they have problems anyway :) ). It is also just about everything
else you might need for Linux. The downside is the seemingly millions of command sequences
you need to learn. It's worth it though. |
Other Links |
New Mexico Linux Users Group |
Users are the lifeblood of Linux and the LUGs have done a lot of good
things in the community. This seems so far like a really dedicated LUG and
the mailing list is worth the price of admission ($0) by itelf. It's open
to newbies and advanced system admin types alike. |
Google |
Google is a really good search engine that runs on a bunch of Linux
machines. It's about the "smartest" search engine around and rarely gives
totally irrelevant results like the others. |
Project Gutenberg |
Project Gutenberg is a project involved in getting as many out-of-copyright
texts online as possible for you to read, free. It's a really great project
and has a lot of classics in it's archives. It's not Linux related really
it's worthwhile for everybody to check out (and help out!).
|
Copyleft.net |
Copyleft sells tshirts, hats, stickers, and other merchandise related to
Linux and the Open Source community. They also donate part of the profits to the Free
Software Foundation and other open source projects. |
ThinkGeek |
Another place with really cool Linux/Geek related gear. They have one of
the best mottos I've seen: "stuff for smart masses" |
LinuxMall |
One of the many online retailers dedicated to Linux. They have really
cheap Linux CDs (under $2), full distributions, books, and stuffed versions of Tux, the Linux
mascot. |
LinuxGames |
you guessed it, a great site about all things game related for Linux. |
Segfault.org |
Linux news parody site. |
User Friendly |
comic strip about an internet company. A lot more "inside" the
hacker/geek workplace than Dilbert but not as consistantly funny. Sorry UF fans, I tells
it likes I sees it. |
Linux.com Security Page |
This page has a couple of must read articles if you care about the
security of your Linux machine. (and you should) |
